The “HIRE ANONYMOUS” Petition
Banking Executives at JP Morgan circulated the following cover letter, sent by a tenacious young applicant seeking a coveted Summer Analyst position with the firm. The applicant, a student at NYU describes himself as “terrifyingly efficient.” You can take a look below:

At first, I had mixed emotions about this cover letter. Then I settled on a pragmatic view point. Most resumes are simply mundane. The guy still in college. Other than putting himself through college, what else could he have done or said… Its an internship, for crying out loud. Many IBs and analysts are egotistic and grandiose! He has demonstrated his ability to learn (3.93 @ a top business school), stand out, work hard, and he obviously has a great sense of humor! The guy is not “self absorbed”; he is simply proud of what he has been able to accomplish on his own. He is self sufficient. It is simply gatekeeper grandiosity that has caused this to surface.
The fact that executives would ridicule someone’s cover letter as they are seeking to better themselves shows a lack of consideration and ethical behavior. The people sitting in these offices and circulating this letter obviously have not sought a job in many years and haveĀ for some reason forgotten the need to stand out in the hiring process.
This grandiose positioning of ‘I am an expert in resume writing’ , coming from various commentators, needs to abate because job seekers are simply doing as they are told when seeking employment. Stand out to get in. Unfortunately, the guy may not be reconsidered because this is too messy now. However, he certainly did stand out and that’s going to get him a long way in life.
